While your essays are marked on the same 6-point scale EVERY piece of formal writing is marked on, sometimes one "sub-topic" or another is emphasized.

Usually a whole essay is marked on a multiple of the rubric value. It will be out of 12 or even 24.

For example, the lawyers' briefs and psychologists' reports are marked on the six-point scale, but I place a bit more emphasis on the "ideas" and "voice" marks because playing the role of the lawyer or psychologist is so important.

In a timed essay, usually I will emphasize "ideas" and "structure". I also take into account that it is first-draft writing; that is, you haven't had a chance to use the whole writing process, so I am less snarky about minor spelling mistakes and small grammar issues (anything that makes your reading hard to understand, though, still makes me feel stabbity).

See the "...how marking works" page for more detail.
